Wood burner PM10s

PM10s are particles under 10 microns in diameter. By comparison, a human hair has a diameter of about 80 microns.

PM10s and other particles are a health concern because they can be inhaled into the lungs where they can cause irritation and even cancer. Apart from the burning of wood, PM10s are also emitted by motor vehicles. Very fine particles which are less than 2.5 microns in diameter are referred to as PM2.5s, and are even more hazardous to human health.

The particles emitted from burning wood are a combination of soot, wood tars and ash, which may be attached to each other. PM10 emissions from new wood stoves are regulated in many markets, and wood stove manufacturers need to ensure that their products comply with the latest standards.
