Knitted Wire substrates

Knitted wire is often used to make grease filters for cooking appliances but these only trap liquids and solids and require frequent cleaning to prevent them becoming blocked. Some ovens incorporate a separate catalytic converter based on the conventional honeycomb structure to oxidize pollutants in the gas phase against which a grease filter is ineffective. However, by applying a catalytic coating to a knitted wire filter it can function as a catalytic converter too.

A further advantage is that filter cleaning intervals will be extended, as long as the temperature of the gas passing through it is generally over 225oC (440oF). For this reason, catalytic converters based on knitted wire are ideal for cooking appliances where the hot air is recirculated, such as rapid-cook ovens. The wire must be made from Fecralloy which consists of 74% iron, 21% chromium and 5% aluminium. Fecralloy is chosen because when heated a layer of aluminium oxide forms on its surface, which serves to protect the iron against oxidation and also provides a key for the coating to adhere to. Knitted wire substrates made from Fecralloy therefore meet the hygiene requirements for applications involving food.
